Many people are misinformed about what chiropractic treatment is and the benefits it truly provides. We often hear people say they don’t need a chiropractor because they do yoga or use a thorough stretching routine and are able to “pop” or “crack” their own back. Read on to learn what chiropractic care really is and why stretching isn’t enough.
What Is Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care is an alternative form of medicine that focuses on the proper functioning of the nervous system. The nervous system is made up of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves, and is the body’s primary communication system. A properly functioning nervous system uses the brain to tell the rest of the body what it should do and allow the rest of the body to respond back to the brain. The signal of “pain” makes up only a small portion of what the nervous system is used for, so relying on pain signals as a sign that something is wrong with your nervous system is not healthy. Routine chiropractic care is the best way to ensure your body’s nervous system is consistently functioning as well as possible.
What Is Range Of Motion
There are two different categories of range of motion: segmental and global ranges of motion. Segmental range of motion is the individual movement of spinal joints. Global range of motion is how different parts of your spine move together overall. Global range of motion is usually only affected negatively after segmental range of motion of a specific area has been affected for a while. This means you cannot know for sure whether there is damage or issues with your segmental range of motion simply because your overall bodily range of motion seems to be ok. Chiropractic care helps ensure both segmental and global range of motion are functioning properly.
What Happens When You Pop Or Crack Your Own Neck Or Back
You should never move your neck or back in a manner intentionally meant to “crack” or “pop” the area. This is not only unhealthy but can also be very dangerous. The first reason cracking or popping your own neck or back is an issue is because if there are spinal joints with a limited segmental range of motion, the joints surrounding the area will try to overcompensate for the limited joints and will shift too much. This will eventually lead to issues developing with the surrounding joints that weren’t originally affected. Popping and cracking your own neck or back is always an issue when you don’t have the proper knowledge and training needed to know what type of force to use, where to apply pressure, and when there has been enough force and pressure applied to the area. In fact, attempting to give yourself an adjustment is so risky and dangerous that even the most skilled and trained chiropractors don’t do adjustments on themselves.
