What You Need To Know About How The Body’s Knee Works

We use our knees more often than we realize, and often we don’t realize just how much we rely on them until we begin experiencing pain, swelling, or other irritation in one of our knees. Such pain and swelling can range in severity from a small annoyance to having major impacts on our daily functioning. There are many things that can cause knee pain, swelling, and irritation, but there are also things we can do to correct these issues.

The Knee Joint

When we refer to the body’s “knee”, we are actually referring to the thigh bone (known as the femur), the shin bone (known as the tibia), and the knee cap (known as the patella). The knee is also comprised of cartilage that is one the ends of both the tibia and the femur. Cartilage is what aides the bones in moving freely and smoothly in an appropriate full range of motion and provides a layer of cushioning that works as shock absorption to protect the knee. There is also connective tissue that connect the femur and the tibia and provide stabilization to the joint. There are also tendons which connect the bones of the knee to the muscles and aide in the movement of the joint. Finally, there is liquid in the joint capsule (known as synovial fluid) which reduces friction and encourages smooth movement of the knee.

Common Problems With The Knee

As we stated before, there are many things that can cause pain, swelling, and irritation in the knee. When you think of all the bones, cartilage, connective tissue, tendons, and synovial fluid that make up the knee, an issue with any of these structures can cause pain, swelling, and irritation in the knee as a whole. The cause of an individual’s pain, swelling, or irritation in the knee is often unique to that individual. The knee can be injured due to overuse from highly demanding physical activity such as sports, from trauma caused by an accident, or from every day wear and tear accumulated over the years. A few common symptoms that indicate there is an issue somewhere in the knee include stiffness, noises that sound like something is popping when you move, weakness and instability, and the inability to completely straighten your leg.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Knee Pain, Swelling, And Irritation

Chiropractic care is becoming an increasingly popular choice of alternative medicine for alleviating pain, swelling, and other irritation in the knees. Chiropractic care is known for having many benefits on the functioning of the nervous system, the body’s system responsible for communication between the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs, and every nerve that connects these organs to the rest of the body. The benefits chiropractic manipulations of the spine and knee provide to the nervous system improves the body’s overall wellness and functioning. Chiropractic manipulations of the knee can also help restore a decreased range of motion. When joints are able to move through the proper full range of motion they should be able to, it can help relieve pain, stiffness, swelling, and other irritations.
