The founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), the late Larry Webster, created a specific chiropractic adjustment and technique which allowed chiropractors to safely establish balance in the pelvis of a pregnant woman, thereby reducing undue stress in her uterus and other supporting ligaments
Chiropractic Care and Breech Deliveries
Several birth practitioners show no concern with breech presentations until the 37th week. On an average, about 4% of all pregnancies end up in a breech presentation. A balanced position of a pregnant woman’s pelvis has been clinically proven to give way for optimal fetal positioning. The technique is called the Webster Technique. In the July/August issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, it was reported that there was an 82% success rate of correcting breech issues during delivery when Doctors of Chiropractic used the Webster technique.
Further results reveal that performing the Webster Technique as early as the 8th month of pregnancy may be highly beneficial in preventing a breech delivery from occurring.
As it stands, the ICPA, recommends pregnant women should receive chiropractic car all through their pregnancy to help establish a pelvic balance, and also create enough room for the development of the baby during the course of the pregnancy. One benefit of a balanced pelvis is that it affords babies the opportunity to enter into the right position for their birth and also eliminate any problems involving breech and posterior presentations. Having an optimal baby position during birth removes any form of difficult labor (dystocia), thereby leading to a more straightforward, comfortable and safe delivery.
